Babywearing - free your hands! (#21)
This talk is an overview of babywearing (using baby carriers). Babywearing is a tool that can be used by all parents and caregivers, for newborns through to big kids.
There are many types of carrier - from a modern structured carrier with adjustable straps and buckles to traditional woven wraps and slings. There's something to suit everyone.
Some people will prefer the ease and speed of a buckle carrier, most of these can be worn on the back or front and some can be used for hip carries. They come in different sizes to cater for newborns to preschoolers, and some have inserts or adaptable panels so the same carrier can be used as your child grows.
On the other end of the scale are woven wraps - essentially a long piece of material, specially woven for weight bearing. These can be tied in a number of different ways, and can be used with a child of any size. Some see these wraps as a pretty accessory, as they cover your top, and choose to collect them in different sizes, colours and fibres.
It's important to note the safety measures - the carrier must be tight, baby’s face needs to be in view, close enough to kiss, keep the chin off the chest, and support the spine. If these simple guidelines are followed, babywearing is very safe.
There are so many situations in which babywearing is especially useful - when you need both hands free to wrangle a toddler, when your baby has reflux and needs to be upright after feeds, when you're navigating public transport or going hiking. Can you think of some more?
Babywearing is a handy tool for anyone - hopefully you will now feel more confident to try it yourself, and recommend it to friends, family and patients.
