Opening Pandora’s Box – genetic opportunities in the 21st century (#1)
There has never been a more exciting, nor terrifying, time in prenatal diagnosis. Accurate ultrasound imaging, combined with new modalities in non-invasive prenatal screening and improved diagnostic opportunities in prenatal diagnosis have demonstrated the breadth of future possibilities. The practitioner’s ability to adequately communicate these options is tested. The patient’s understanding of genetic screening and diagnosis is continually challenged. The community’s perception of the accuracy and limitations of these tests currently falls short. The 21st century will be remembered as a time of genetic potential and limitations. As prenatal diagnosticians, our responsibility is to communicate the risks and benefits of these tests and to future-proof the possibilities.
