I am a GP and Psychotherapist primarily working at headspace Cairns. I have a mixed role including seeing clients for medical, psychological medicine and psychotherapy appointments. I participate in all the activities of the Clinical Team including intake assessments and meeting, case reviews and peer supervision. I previously worked at headspace Townsville for four years in a similar role and was GP Advisor to Mental Health Programs for Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local.
I love teaching, and have co-authored two “Level 2” FPS-Skills Training programs for GPs, and provided consultancy into a number of other GP MH skills training programs. I am a part-time medical educator with Generalist Medical Training (JCU) and in this role I regularly visit Mt Isa and enjoy working with doctors and registrars there, as well as making a small contribution to headspace Mt Isa. I also previously worked as a tutor in the Master of Mental Health (Psychotherapy) program at the University of Queensland.
I am involved in the Mental Health Professionals Network at local and national levels and am a regular facilitator on their national Webinar Program. I am currently the President of the Australian Society for Psychological Medicine, and a member of the RACGP NFSI Psychological Medicine network, the ISSTD (International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation), and ISPS Australia (the International Society for Social and Psychological Approaches to Psychosis).
My professional interests include promoting the value of Therapeutic Relationships in primary care, lifestyle medicine, adolescent mental health, Balint groups and Psychoanalytic, Jungian, EMDR therapy and Existential theory & practice. I have enjoyed living in FNQ for over 17 years, and share the beautiful places and adventures with my two sons, my partner and a network of wonderful friends. I also retain strong connections in Sydney where I grew up, and where the majority of my extended family are based. I have a dreadful work-life balance but fortunately I find my work incredibly meaningful and I feel privileged to do most of it. Running (only occasionally and very slowly), food, music and good company are amongst my favourite non-work activities.
